To Be or Not To Be… Gluten Free

What would you do if you were Gluten Free (by choice) and your doctor asked you to do this?

  1. I guess I don’t understand why the doctor wants you to do this at all?

    • Because my sister (a 1st degree relative) has celiac disease, I was supposed to get the blood test prior to going GF but I was unaware of that. So, now he would like me to get the test to rule out any sensitivity/intolerance, etc…. It sounds a little backward thinking but I guess I can understand his “theory” and at least it will be on my medical record for future reference. I hope that helps to clarify it a little better. Thanks for your comment 🙂

  2. I am in a very similar situation – not G-F as long as you but definitely long enough to know that it is right for me.

Recently some other health issues have arisen that makes me and my doctor think that I may be celiac, or at least gluten sensitive. I elected to eat gluten again for 10 days before my blood tests and they came back negative, with the caveat that it could be a false negative due to one of the blood marker results.

So back to G-F and now I learn we are going to do the gastroscopy and the celiac biopsy so I will have to eat gluten again for 10 day to 2 weeks leading up to that for realistic results.

Whether they find anything or not I am going back to G-F.

So, to answer your question, YES… because I WANT to know so it is worth it to me.

If you have children or think about having children, then I think you would want to know too as these conditions are genetic and you already know celiac is in your family.

    Good luck with your decision.

    • Hi Elle,
Yes, I agree about wanting to know. I also have children and would like for them to be tested also. After a month of eating a little bit of gluten here and there, I have not seen many negative results (except a headache) so I don’t think it is a problem but I will still remain GF after the month is up. Thanks for your comment 🙂
